Eyeliner remains an essential product to have in your make-up kit. As a minimum, you need black eyeliner. This is indispensable for brown, green, black, blue, grey or hazel eyes. It can also correct the shape of your eyes. To be specific, it can enlarge small eyes or lift droopy eyes. With eyeliner, your eyes can be transformed in a breathtaking way.
Eyeliner is known for being sometimes complex to apply - even more so if you use liquid eyeliner. That's why AddictaLash is happy to share with you all our tips on how to apply eyeliner in the most effective possible way. The purpose of this article is not only to provide you with a technique for applying eyeliner but also to give you all those little tips that may seem trivial but make all the difference.

1. Optimize your environment to apply your eyeliner

That's not the first time you've come across this advice, is it? However, a bit of serenity and organization is necessary in the art of good make-up on a daily basis.

Tip 1: Take the time you need

Above all, it is essential, especially if you are just starting out, to apply your eyeliner without being pressed for time. Believe me, deciding to apply your eyeliner at the last minute is almost an impossible task. Unless, of course, you have mastered the application 😉.

Tip 2: Focus

Also, be sure to eliminate all sources of distraction. You'll need to be as focused as possible. The application of eyeliner is a delicate task that needs to be uninterrupted! 

Tip 3: Make yourself comfortable

Try, if possible, to sit down. Use a mirror, large or small, that does not need to be held up. In other words, use a wall-mounted or free-standing mirror. If the latter is also magnifying, it's perfect. You need to be able to see yourself up close in this mirror. It is also important to be able to rest your elbows on a flat surface, such as a sink. This way your hand will be more stable and you will be able to apply your eyeliner more skillfully. Finally, check that the room is sufficiently lit. It is rather difficult to try to apply eyeliner in the dark. 😉

Tip 4: Don't get discouraged

Be aware of the difficulty of the gesture but do not give up. If you are a beginner, we are not hiding you, applying your eyeliner will seem difficult. It is, in fact, one of the most feared make-up techniques. However, in the beginning. The good news is that, like everything else, it can be learned. In the beginning, you will fail, you will take time to get the perfect line, you will try, you will remove, you will start again... We have all been there: the professional make-up artists, the youtube beauticians or simply the eyeliner experts that you meet in the street. However, a pretty line of eyeliner brings out any look that it would be a shame not to persevere. The secret to perfect application is in one word: practice.

2. Follow these three rules to draw a perfect line of eyeliner 

In our opinion, the ideal eyeliner line should respect these three principles:

Rule #1: Use an imaginary line to determine your ideal eyeliner line.

To determine the right angle for the extension of your eyeliner line, imagine a line that runs from the middle of the tip of your nose to the outer corner of your eye.

Rule #2: Do not extend your line beyond one centimeter from the outer corner of your eye. 

A line of eyeliner that is too long is not very pretty and may make your face look narrow. That's why I advise you to respect the one centimeter rule. It comes from our own experience. I have tried many eyeliner lines in recent years, and it is always a line that is not too thick and one centimeter longer that I find the most complementary 🙂
 

Rule #3: The line should be thicker at the outer corner than at the inner corner.

As you can see in the image above, the eyeliner line thickens as it extends outward from the eye. This is how you need to draw your line so that it subtly highlights your eyes.

3. How to apply your eyeliner

How to apply eyeliner is a question that can be answered in many ways. Indeed there is no single way to do it. The right method is the one that allows you to achieve your line almost every time. So when you start, I think it is a good idea to try several techniques... 

Step 1: Getting into position 😀 

Face the mirror and tilt your head back slightly. Your chin should point forward and your eyes should remain open. If it's easier for you, you can keep your eyelids half-closed. In any case, try not to close your eyes. Rest your elbows on the flat surface and find your stability.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, steps 2 to 5 are summarized in the photograph at the end of this article. Do not hesitate to refer to it to better understand the overall technique.

This application method is suitable for all types of eyeliner. However, if you use AddictaLash magnetic liquid eyeliner, felt tip eyeliner or pencil eyeliner, the use of a brush is not necessary since the tool is the product.

Step 2: Draw the "butterfly wings".

Start by drawing the outer line on your mobile eyelid with an angled brush. You can use a precision brush, but to draw butterfly wings, it's easier with a small angled brush. The shorter the line, the more discreet the rendering will be. For a "doe-eyed", or "cat-eyed" result, you have to extend the line more. But don't forget the centimetre rule. One and a half centimeters, absolute maximum 😉

After taking your eyeliner with your brush, simply place the slice of it on the outside of the eye.  This will form your first butterfly wing.

Make sure to respect the rule of the imaginary line and the "centimeter" rule, which we specified previously.

If this is difficult for you, you can help yourself with the tape technique. Place a piece of tape, which follows the imaginary line, directly on your face. Apply your eyeliner and once you have finished step 5, remove the tape. This will give you an extremely precise line.

Let it dry for a few seconds before putting your head straight again. Otherwise you risk transferring eyeliner to the top of your eyelid. Nevertheless, if this happens, it is time to use a cotton swab soaked in cleansing micellar water or waterproof eye makeup remover.

Proceed in the same way with your second eye and check that the two lines are symmetrical. If this is not the case, you can adjust the line. Either add eyeliner or erase all or part of your line. Once again, cotton swabs will be useful.

Step 3: Shaping the tip

Then, still using your bevelled brush or your precision brush, draw a new line that starts from the outer tip of the previous line and reaches the middle of your eyelid. Work gently, line by line. Make sure your line is flush with the lashes. If possible, make sure it is as precise and as fine as possible.

Step 4: Extend the line to the inner corner

Finely extend this line a few millimeters from the inner corner of your eye.

Step 5: Colour the tip

Fill in the previously formed tip by adding a little AddictaLash eyeliner.

At the end of this fifth step, and for more intensity, we advise you to double your eyeliner line in order to apply the magnetic eyelashes afterwards. Once again, work slowly and diligently.

You can perform steps 2 to 5 with a lightly tinted powder - in particular, a grey or brown eye shadow. This technique is useful for beginners as the powder will be easier to remove. This allows you to have a sketch of your final line. Then, if you are satisfied, it will be easier to line with AddictaLash eyeliner by following the pre-defined line.
